On Halloween night in 2000, Widespread Panic took the Austin City Limits stage and turned in one of the most cherished shows in the band's history. It was the classic lineup, John Bell, Dave Schools, JoJo Hermann, Todd Nance, and Sunny Ortiz, anchored by founding guitarist Michael Houser, whose nickname gave the band its name.
Houser died less than two years later, which makes this set an essential document of his playing. The show opens with Vic Chesnutt's "Let's Get Down to Business" before tearing into "Ain't Life Grand," "Space Wrangler," and "Blue Indian," and the centerpiece is a sprawling "Driving Song > Surprise Valley > Driving Song" jam that runs past fourteen minutes.
Eleven tracks in all, catching Panic at the peak of their improvisational powers in front of a Halloween crowd that matched them note for note, and a special one for a record shop just up the road from Austin.
This limited deluxe edition, exclusive to independent record stores, is pressed on rainbow splatter vinyl across two LPs with all-new artwork from JT Lucchesi. Out October 30 on New West.
