Formed in the late 1980s at the University of Maryland, Velocity Girl became a leading light of the American underground by perfectly fusing the sugary hooks of British indie-pop with the roaring, fuzzy textures of shoegaze. Their 1993 debut, Copacetic, was a massive success for Sub Pop, famously becoming the label's second best-selling album of the era (trailing only Nirvana’s Bleach). However, for decades, the band felt the original mix was too "stripped-down" and lacked the lushness they intended. Now, with UltraCopacetic, the band presents a radical "alternate history" of their debut—remixed and expanded to finally sound the way it was always meant to.
Spearheaded by guitarist Archie Moore, this version was rebuilt from the original 2-inch tape reels discovered in a family attic. The result is a transformative listening experience: Sarah Shannon’s operatic vocals are clearer, the "chiming lead guitars" are brighter, and the "juicy fuzzed-out rhythm guitars" carry a much more powerful sonic blast. From the infectious jangle of "Audrey’s Eyes" and "Pop Loser" to the ambitious, swirling depths of "Pretty Sister," the album has been restored to its full "copacetic" glory—balancing 60s-style pop songwriting with scrappy US indie grit.
This Sub Pop "Loser Edition" is a deluxe 2xLP set pressed on opaque red vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves. In addition to the newly remixed debut, the second disc features a "full album's worth" of bonus material, including the band’s complete 1993 John Peel Session and rare B-sides like "Warm/Crawl" and "Creepy." Mastered by Golden Mastering to preserve every nuance of the new mix, this release is the ultimate document of a band that bridged the gap between the D.C. scene and the global shoegaze movement.
