The film rewrote what animation could look like. The soundtrack did something similar with what a superhero movie could sound like. Instead of orchestral swells and a licensed rock cut over the credits, Republic assembled a hip-hop record built around Miles Morales as an actual Brooklyn teenager, and it landed the same week the movie did in December 2018.

"Sunflower" is the reason most people own this. Post Malone and Swae Lee's featherweight, endlessly hummable duet went to number one on the Hot 100 and has since become the first single in RIAA history certified double diamond, twenty million units in the US alone, more certifications than any other song ever released. But it earns its place here rather than towering over everything: "What's Up Danger" by Blackway and Black Caviar is the surging, gut-drop centerpiece of the film's best sequence, and around them sit Nicki Minaj and Anuel AA on "Familia," Juice WRLD's "Hide," Aminé's "Invincible," Vince Staples' "Home," Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla $ign on "Scared of the Dark," Ski Mask the Slump God, Denzel Curry, and Jaden Smith.

Thirteen tracks, front-loaded with the singles, sequenced to move. It went platinum on its own terms and holds up as one of the few soundtracks of the era that people actually play start to finish.
