Crown In The Grave is Trivium's eleventh studio album, and the Orlando band treated it as a chance to rethink what a Trivium record can be rather than coast on a long and celebrated catalog. It is their first album with drummer Alex Rüdinger, formerly of Whitechapel, and the first full-length they recorded at The Hangar, the studio and rehearsal space they built themselves back home.
The record draws its imagery from Japanese horror, a thread that runs from the opening "Jorōgumo" through the title track. Singles "Dead Inside of Me" and "Crown in the Grave" showed the band in prime form, with Matt Heafy and Corey Beaulieu trading galloping riffs and soaring solos over Rüdinger's battering-ram drumming, and Heafy's melodic choruses cutting through the aggression.
Longtime producer Josh Wilbur returned behind the board, and Jacob Hansen mixed the album for the first time, giving the band's balance of melody and brutality a bright, punishing edge.
