Tove Lo - ESTRUS [Ruby Red]

Tove Lo has spent a decade writing songs that refuse to pick a side between euphoria and misery, and on her sixth album she stops apologizing for it entirely. ESTRUS is an emo chic moment, leaning all the way into the contradictions that have defined her work rather than trying to resolve them.

Across thirteen tracks the production stays visceral and body-moving while the writing gets sharper and more observant, which is a difficult trick to pull off without one undercutting the other. "A Lot of Feelings, No Solutions" sets out the thesis in its title, "I'm Your Girl Right?" works the desire-and-doubt axis she has always owned, and "Des Fleurs" brings in Stromae for the album's most unexpected turn. She is not offering answers anywhere on it. She stays inside the mess, which has always been the mission: make people feel everything at once.

Few pop writers are this willing to leave the contradiction unresolved, and fewer still can make it this danceable.
