Formed in Leeds in 1980, The Sisters of Mercy found early underground success in their hometown’s post-punk scene before achieving a commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s. They sustained mainstream attention into the early 1990s, at which point they ceased releasing new material in protest against their record label.

The band released three original studio albums—First and Last and Always (1985), Floodland (1987), and Vision Thing (1990)—each recorded with a different lineup. Vocalist and songwriter Andrew Eldritch, accompanied by his ever-reliable drum machine, Doktor Avalanche, has remained the sole constant member throughout the band's history.
