The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??!

Do You Want More?!!!??! is the second studio album by The Roots and their major-label debut, arriving in 1995 two years after their independent debut, Organix. It's widely considered a classic of jazz rap, the album that established the group as the standard-bearers of underground, jazz-infused hip hop built around live instrumentation rather than samples and turntables, a genuine outlier in an era dominated by New York boom-bap and West Coast G-funk.

The lineup at the time, Black Thought and Malik "B" Basit on vocals, Questlove on drums, Scott Storch on keys, and Leonard "Hub" Hubbard on bass, gives the record its loose, live-band feel throughout. "Proceed" stands as one of the album's best productions, pairing Black Thought's sharp, adroit lyricism with a laid-back, jazzy groove, while "Silent Treatment" ranks among the best rap ballads of the decade, built on real vulnerability rather than posturing. Together, the tracks showcase a group as comfortable stretching out instrumentally as they were trading verses.

In 1998, the album earned a spot on The Source's list of the 100 Best Rap Albums, cementing its place as a genuine classic rather than just a promising debut. Decades later, it remains a foundational document of live-instrumentation hip hop.
