The comeback story behind Focus is as powerful as the music inside it. Six years after their last album, The Heavy Eyes' fifth studio record arrives on the other side of a genuinely harrowing period for the band. Frontman Tripp Shumake was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease while recording was already underway, battling fatigue from treatment to finish his vocals before a successful kidney transplant in 2022 finally cleared the path forward. The album that was supposed to arrive in 2020 has been through the fire and come out harder, heavier, and more vital for it.

Rooted deep in Memphis soil and fed through layers of fuzz, heat, and hypnotic repetition, Focus is Shumake, Matthew Qualls, Wally Anderson, and Eric Garcia at their most electrifying and their most fully realized. Drawing from the lineage of Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, and the heavier side of the Black Keys while maintaining the distinctly Southern grit that has always separated them from their peers, the band delivers 11 tracks that move freely between crushing riff-led burners and more spaced-out, trance-like moments without ever losing their grounding. Sprawling guitar solos caress gargantuan grooves. Languid, soulful vocals preach the gospel of a band reborn. As Shumake himself puts it: "We want to use those impressions to bend our sound into new and exciting ideas for the listener and us, while still remaining true to our Memphis rock and roll roots. To focus on the thrill of creating something that wasn't there before."

This is not a band chasing trends. This is a band that knows exactly who they are and have never sounded more sure of it. On limited yellow vinyl, from one of heavy rock's most essential underground acts.
