There are albums that matter, and then there are albums that save lives. Captain My Captain is the second and final studio album from Portland's Team Dresch, released in 1996, and it belongs firmly in the second category. Combining the brazenness of Riot Grrrl with the epic, churning intensity of grunge and the fearless political urgency of queercore, it is one of the most important punk records of its era and a record that has only grown in stature and meaning in the decades since.
Where their 1995 debut Personal Best raged against the Christian right and small towns, Captain My Captain finds Donna Dresch, Jody Bleyle, Kaia Wilson, and newly joined drummer Melissa York reaching for something larger: community, belonging, and the fierce, defiant act of self-creation. York's arrival from the New York scene adds a new dimension to the band's quintessentially Northwestern energy, her drumming bringing a showmanship and precision that lifts the whole record. The riffs are ferocious and intricate, played fast and with total conviction, and the lyrics match them note for note. "Remember who you are," they roar over the noise of busted closets. "Make up who you are."
Across 35 minutes, Team Dresch accomplish more than most bands manage in an entire career. The fierce and biting lyrics, the raging skilled punk rock sound, and the palpable sense of a community speaking to and for itself combine into something that transcends genre entirely. Punk rock will never be the same.
