Steve Bates - An Infinite Antenna

Steve Bates came up through the anarcho-punk scene of the Canadian Prairies before becoming one of Montréal's most respected sound artists. He founded Winnipeg's Send + Receive festival in 1998, runs his own label The Dim Coast, and with An Infinite Antenna delivers his second solo album for Constellation.

The twelve pieces were built from source recordings gathered between 2023 and 2025 during residencies and site-specific installations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Greece and Saskatchewan. Bates folds his signal-bending and field-recording sensibility together with leftfield synth work, deconstructed drum machine, pointillist electric guitar and radio static. His punk roots show in the structure: most tracks are short and sharply defined, separated by brief silences, yet the sequencing makes them flow as one continuous piece. Titles like "Swiss Apartment Layouts" and "Lettre d'amour à Fly Pan Am" hint at the wit running through it.

The cover was photographed in Sarajevo. An absorbing, restless listen for anyone drawn to the space where noise, ambient and post-hardcore overlap.
