Space Afrika - Quiet Storm [Ice Blue Clear]

Quiet Storm is the first full-length from Space Afrika since 2021's Honest Labour, and it is the most ambitious thing the Manchester and Berlin duo of Joshua Inyang and Joshua Tarelle Reid have made. Self-produced and self-funded, it widens their dub-soaked ambient into a sprawling collaborative record with live strings, guitar and drums running through it.

The guest list sets the scope: Grammy-winning soprano Axelle Fanyo opens the album on "Vanity," and Tony Njoku, Vanessa Bedoret, Kiala Ogawa, Deuén, Klein and RXKNephew all step in across thirteen tracks. The duo describe the record as a challenge to their own ideas of identity, class and diaspora, and the music moves between ambient drift, trip-hop pulse, techno undertow and modern classical structure while keeping the raw, late-night feel that made their earlier work so distinctive.

The artist Glenn Ligon provided the cover, his 2009 work Figure #30, and also named the album after the 1970s late-night radio format.
