For her third album, Vienna-based artist Sofie Royer builds a shimmering electro-pop world out of a piece of French anarchist theory. Young-Girl Forever, released in November 2024, takes its title from Tiqqun's Preliminary Materials for the Theory of a Young-Girl, which casts the "Young-Girl" as the perfect figure of modern consumerism. Royer picks up that idea and turns it into a bold, ambivalent portrait of what it means to be a female artist now, surrounded by capitalist trappings, existential doubt, and the constant sense of being out of step with everyone her age.
Following 2020's Cult Survivor and 2022's Harlequin, the record is Royer's most fully realized. It glides between glossy synth-pop and something darker underneath, songs like "Babydoll," "Young-Girl (Illusion)," and "I Forget (I'm So Young)" wrapping sharp cultural critique in melodies that never stop shimmering. The whole thing oscillates between optimism and doom, celebrating the Young-Girl in one breath and rebuking the culture that manufactured her in the next.
That tension is the point. Beneath the pop sheen runs a real desire for liberation, and Royer never lets the surface pleasure cancel out the unease. It's a smart, seductive album that rewards close listening as much as it works on a dance floor.
Released on Stones Throw, Young-Girl Forever arrives as a vinyl LP. A striking statement from one of contemporary pop's most conceptually fearless voices.
