Before the rage beats and the arena tours, there was a kid from Atlanta who figured out that you could build a hit song out of almost nothing. Released in April 2017, Carti's self-titled debut mixtape turned minimalism into a style. Sparse beats, endless ad-libs, hooks that repeat until they hypnotize you, and lyrics that function more like percussion than storytelling. It debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 and eventually went platinum, but its real legacy is how thoroughly a generation of rappers copied it.

Pi'erre Bourne handled the bulk of the production, and the pairing was lightning in a bottle. "Magnolia" rides a New Orleans bounce rhythm, a summery flute loop, and one of the most quoted hooks of the decade all the way to number 29 on the Hot 100. "wokeuplikethis*" puts Carti and Lil Uzi Vert in the same booth for four minutes of pure chemistry. Elsewhere, "Let It Go," "dothatshit!," and "Lookin" stretch the same formula in different directions while never breaking the woozy, weightless mood. A$AP Rocky executive produced the tape and turns up on the mic, with Southside, Hit-Boy, Jake One, and Harry Fraud contributing beats.

Nearly a decade later, this remains the purest distillation of what makes Carti compelling. No filler, no ambition beyond the vibe, just forty-seven minutes of atmosphere and swagger that reset the sound of Southern rap almost by accident.
