While the 1980s output of Nocturnal Emissions was defined by eclectic, adventurous, and often raw industrial experimentation, 1991’s Cathedral stands as something else entirely. It is a ritualistic and expansive work that trades jagged noise for awe-inducing, ethereal soundscapes. Moving between warm, ominous, and meditative drones, the album represents a "celestially minded" peak for Nigel Ayers. Originally released only on CD by Italy’s Musica Maxima Magnetica, this "masterpiece of abstract ambient" has remained out of print on physical media for decades—until now.
This deluxe 2LP edition from No Holiday finally gives Cathedral the presentation it deserves. Pressed as a limited run of 600 copies, the set features stunning Red & Black Marble and Blue & Black Marble vinyl. The records are housed in a heavy-duty gatefold jacket finished with silver foil, reflecting the album's "monolithic and shimmering" quality. To complete the experience, the release includes a 12-page large-format booklet featuring an essay by Nigel Ayers and a curated selection of his visual works from the same era, making it a "vital artifact" for any collector of industrial and drone history.
