Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Neil Young's second solo album, released in May 1969, is where he found the sound he would return to for the rest of his career. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was his first record with Crazy Horse, the trio of guitarist Danny Whitten, bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, and the loose, ragged interplay between Young and that band is the whole point.

Three of its best-known songs were written in a single afternoon while Young was in bed with a 103-degree fever: "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand." The first is a short blast of crunching riff. The other two stretch past nine and ten minutes, built on long, searching guitar exchanges between Young and Whitten. Between them sit the country lilt of the title track and the fragile "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)."

Produced by Young with David Briggs, the album reached number 34 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum. It remains the template for every Crazy Horse record that followed.
