With Dance Called Memory, Nation of Language continue to redefine the possibilities of modern synth-driven music. The band’s fourth album is spectral and spacious, balancing minimal wave, post-punk, goth, and new romantic textures while always sounding uniquely their own.
Frontman Ian Richard Devaney began writing these songs in intimate fashion, using simple guitar sketches to chip away at melancholia before expanding them into widescreen synth-pop explorations. The result is an album that translates individual grief and longing into a collective sense of empathy and connection.
Following the acclaim of Strange Disciple (2023), which was named Rough Trade’s Album of the Year and praised by Pitchfork for proving the band were “getting bigger and better,” Dance Called Memory marks another leap forward. The album was produced with longtime collaborator Nick Millhiser (LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost!) and expands the band’s sonic palette with chopped-up drum breaks reminiscent of Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine and processed percussion that recalls early-2000s electronic music.
Highlights include the devastatingly beautiful single “Now That You’re Gone”, inspired by personal loss and the bonds of friendship, alongside tracks like “I’m Not Ready for the Change” and “In Another Life”, which showcase the group’s fearless experimentation.
At its heart, Dance Called Memory leans toward the Brian Eno school of thought, crafting synthesized music that feels profoundly human. In an age increasingly defined by artificial creation, Nation of Language use this record to affirm vulnerability, connection, and empathy as their guiding lights.
