In the summer of 1996, a New York trio became the unlikely voice of every teenager who ever felt left out. "Popular," with Matthew Caws deadpanning lines from a vintage advice book for teens over grinding guitars, climbed into the top 15 of the Modern Rock chart and made Nada Surf's debut, High/Low, one of the defining alternative records of its year.
Produced by Ric Ocasek of the Cars and recorded in under three weeks at Electric Lady Studios, the album pairs crunchy, loud-quiet dynamics with genuinely sweet melodies. "Deeper Well" and "Sleep" show off the band's knack for slow-building tension, while "Treehouse," "Icebox" and "Zen Brain" reveal the pop craft that would carry them through decades of beloved records to come. Ocasek keeps the sound lean and direct, letting the songs do the work.
For many listeners it was the first chapter in a long friendship with one of indie rock's most dependable bands, and it holds up as a sharp, honest snapshot of mid-'90s guitar rock.
This Rocktober 2026 Rhino Reserve edition, a brick and mortar exclusive, presents the album on 180-gram black vinyl with lacquers cut by Jeff Powell and pressing at Fidelity Record Pressing, housed in a gatefold jacket.
