After the fireworks of their debut, Mogwai followed up in March 1999 with a record that seemed built to shock. The cover nodded to The Exorcist and the title came from a Glasgow gang slogan. Instead, Come On Die Young turned out to be darkly elegiac and surprisingly restrained.
Recorded with Dave Fridmann, the album trades volume for atmosphere. "Cody" is one of the band's rare vocal songs and one of their loveliest, "Christmas Steps" builds to a genuinely frightening peak, and "Punk Rock:" opens the record with a sample of Iggy Pop pondering what punk really means.
It is a slow-burning, deeply rewarding album that many fans rank alongside or even above the debut.
This reissue on Chemikal Underground presents the album across two grey LPs in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork and a digital download code. Reserve yours now.
