Matt Elliott’s The Broken Man marks a stark, introspective chapter in his discography. Leaving behind the heavier outbursts of earlier works, this album leans into vulnerability, fragility, and slow-burning intensity. Stripped-down arrangements, aching melodies, and ghostly European folk influences set the tone for an emotionally resonant experience that unfolds gradually over repeated listens.
This is Elliott at his most exposed—his voice expressive and resigned, weaving personal storytelling into minimalist compositions laced with choirs, bells, and ethereal trumpet. Collaborator Katia Labeque lends a delicate piano improvisation that anchors one of the album’s standout epics, while “Dust Flesh and Bones” emerges as perhaps Elliott’s most profoundly moving work to date. The Broken Man straddles the acoustic melancholy of the Songs trilogy and the atmospheric layers of his Third Eye Foundation material, expertly mixed by Yann Tiersen.
A haunting, immersive album that rewards patient listening.
