Mastodon have always written their way through loss, but never under circumstances like these. Marrow Deep is the Atlanta band's first album since 2021's Hushed and Grim and their first since the death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds, to whom it is dedicated. Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher carry on with guitarist Nick Johnston, and the result is one of the most emotionally charged records of their career.
Recorded at the band's own West End Sound in Atlanta and co-produced with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, the album is equal parts crushing and cathartic. Lead single "Snakes for Dinner" brings in Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, his first appearance on a Mastodon record since 2006, while "Barbarians Blood," "Golden Spires" and the closing "The Three Fates" stretch the band's progressive side across four sides of vinyl. Andrew Scheps handled the mix.
Its themes draw on the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile ties between life, loss and destiny. It is also the band's first release for Loma Vista after two decades on Reprise, a new chapter that honors everything that came before it.
This limited indie exclusive edition is a 2LP set pressed on coke bottle clear vinyl, with a printed lyric insert.
