Originally created by Madlib for his own private enjoyment—specifically for a ten-hour flight to Tokyo—Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix is far more than a standard remix project. It is a "monolithic and visceral" reimagining of the 2004 classic Madvillainy. After appearing as a CD-only inclusion in the 2008 limited-edition box set, this "stunningly unique" project finally received its definitive wide release on vinyl. It captures the "amoeba genius" of MF DOOM’s original verses stripped of their initial context and draped over a fresh landscape of "unpredictable, blunted beat aesthetics."
This double-LP edition is the first to feature a full printed cover (designed by Jeff Jank) and includes a 12-page mini-comic/booklet titled "Meanwhile..." which continues the visual narrative started in the "All Caps" music video. From the "hard-rocking boom bap" of "Drainos" to the "hazy, smoked-out jazz" of "Boulder Holder," the album is a "major triumph" of experimentation that proves Madlib's refusal to adhere to convention. Complete with an MP3 download card, this pressing is an "essential and foundational" artifact for any disciple of the Villain.
