The title of Leon Bridges' fifth album works as a mission statement and an invitation at the same time. Happiness Anytime is built to be put on regardless of what kind of day you are having, and within a few bars it has moved you somewhere coastal and warm.
He made it with J. Lloyd and Lydia Kitto of Jungle, and the division of labor shows in how unusually cohesive it sounds. Lloyd shaped the production, the arrangements, and the sonic architecture. Kitto brought melodic instinct and harmonic detail, and turns up singing on "All Day, All Night." Bridges concentrated on feeling, storytelling, and his voice, which has never been placed this carefully. The reference points run through Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, Brazilian music, disco, and South American rhythm, but the record never sounds like a survey. It sounds like three musicians who found a shared idea and chased it.
Tracks like "Light the Way," "Tears of Joy," and "Your Love Is Electric" push his Texas soul further from revivalism than he has ever taken it, into something looser and more physical without giving up the warmth that made people pay attention in the first place.
This indie exclusive pressing is on red vinyl in a gatefold jacket, out September 25, 2026 through Columbia Records. Limited to independent retail.
