Sturgill Simpson has made a career out of refusing to repeat himself, and under the name Johnny Blue Skies he has stopped pretending otherwise. Mutiny After Midnight, the follow-up to 2024's Passage Du Desir, arrived in March 2026 with a mission statement about as far from outlaw country as it gets: "We set out to achieve one goal: to make a dance record."

He means it. Recorded at Easy Eye Sound in Nashville with his band, The Dark Clouds, the album draws on the fusion-funk of Stuff and the grit of Marvin Gaye's In Our Lifetime, and it plays like a group effort, with every member pushing the groove. The provocative opener "Make America Fuk Again" comes out swinging with rip-roaring rock, while "Viridescent" slows everything down for one of the most tender, poetic songs in his catalog. In between, the band sounds loose, loud, and fully in on the joke: fun, messy, and intentional all at once.

The record is split down the middle between what Simpson calls the dark state of the world and the bright state of love, and that tension gives the party its weight. It is uncensored and frequently filthy, but the songwriting underneath is as sharp as ever, the work of an artist who keeps changing shape without losing the thread. Released through his own High Top Mountain label in partnership with Atlantic Outpost, it is another left turn from one of the few artists who can make one feel inevitable.

This standard edition is pressed on 140-gram black vinyl. If Passage Du Desir was the late-night drive, this is where the car ends up.
