Description Tracklist

John Abercrombie's first record as a leader, cut over two days in June 1974 at Generation Sound in New York, with Jan Hammer on organ, synthesizer and piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Three players, no bassist, and no obvious plan to stay in one lane.

"Lungs" opens the album with twelve minutes of Hammer's organ and Abercrombie's distortion locked together over DeJohnette, and it is as heavy as anything ECM released in the seventies. Then "Love Song" and "Ralph's Piano Waltz" pull hard in the other direction, and the closing title track spends twelve minutes somewhere between the two. The argument between those modes is the whole point of the record.

Manfred Eicher produced, Jan Erik Kongshaug mixed, Bob Ludwig mastered at Sterling Sound. It became one of the durable early ECM titles and opened a run of Abercrombie records for the label that lasted the rest of his life.
