By 1996, Jamiroquai had already built a solid following with their first two records, but Travelling Without Moving turned them into a genuine global phenomenon. Released that September, the album became their breakthrough in the United States, where it gave the band their first entry on the Billboard 200, and it performed even better at home, peaking at number two on the UK chart. The sales kept piling up long after release, eventually earning the album a Guinness World Record as the best selling funk album of all time.

Much of that success traces back to "Virtual Insanity," the album's defining single and one of the most visually iconic songs of the decade. Jonathan Glazer's video, built around a floor that appeared to move beneath Jay Kay while the room stayed perfectly still, swept the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, taking home four trophies including Video of the Year. Musically, the track captures everything that made this album work: tight, live funk grooves layered with synths and Kay's falsetto, anchored by a rhythm section that never lets the song lose its pocket. "Cosmic Girl," "Use the Force," and "Alright" carry that same blend of disco, funk, and acid jazz across the rest of the record, making it the most consistently confident set of songs the band had released to that point.

Travelling Without Moving remains the album most people think of first when they think of Jamiroquai, the moment the band's ambition and their sound finally matched up completely.
