J Balvin - Colores

By 2020, J Balvin had already helped carry reggaeton to the top of the global charts, and Colores is him distilling that appeal into its purest, brightest form. His fifth solo studio album is a tight concept record, ten songs each named for a color, built less around blockbuster singles than around mood, texture, and feel. It arrived on March 19, 2020, a jolt of pure sunshine landing just as much of the world was going dark, and its escapist warmth only made it land harder.

Working hand in glove with his longtime producer Sky Rompiendo, Balvin keeps everything breezy and unhurried. "Rojo" glows, "Morado" shimmers, and the lone outlier "Arcoiris" (rainbow) ties the palette together, all of it carried by his laid-back, endlessly melodic delivery. Rather than chase maximalist hooks, the record leans into atmosphere, treating color as both concept and sonic guide.

The visual world is just as central to the appeal. Balvin partnered with acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, whose signature smiling flowers bloom across the album artwork and its videos, turning Colores into a full audiovisual statement and one of the most striking pop-art crossovers in recent Latin music. It cemented Balvin's reputation as an artist thinking well beyond the song.
