One of the most remarkable origin stories in reggae history. Lascelle "Wiss" Bulgin, Albert "Apple Gabriel" Craig, and Cecil "Skelly" Spence first met as children at a rehabilitation center in Kingston, Jamaica, each having contracted polio at a young age. Brought together by circumstance and bound by a shared Rastafarian faith, they went on to become Israel Vibration, one of the most distinctive and deeply spiritual voices in Jamaican roots reggae.
Released in 1980 on Israel Vibes, Unconquered People is the trio's second album and widely considered one of the finest records of the roots reggae era. Recorded at the legendary Tuff Gong Studios and mixed by Errol Brown, the album is anchored by one of the most extraordinary rhythm sections in reggae history, with Familyman on bass and Carlton Barrett on drums, the same foundation that powered Bob Marley's greatest records. The ensemble is rounded out by Augustus Pablo on piano, Dean Fraser on saxophone, Tyrone Downie and Wire Lindo on keyboards, and Nambo on trombone, giving the album a rich, warm depth that rewards repeated listening.
Thematically the album is a statement of faith, resilience, and resistance, the title itself a declaration from three men who refused to be defined by their physical limitations or society's expectations. Tracks like "Give I Grace," "We A De Rasta," "Survive," and the title track carry that spirit with quiet, unwavering conviction. It is roots reggae at its most pure and soulful, and an essential piece of Jamaican musical history.
