Iron Maiden hit their imperial stride with Powerslave, the 1984 album that found the band at the peak of their galloping, twin-guitar sound and turned that momentum into one of metal's most legendary world tours. Produced by longtime collaborator Martin Birch and recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, the record wrapped Maiden's ferocity in an unforgettable Ancient Egypt concept, all pharaohs, tombs, and deathless tyranny, that carried straight through to the stage design of the massive World Slavery Tour.
The songs matched the ambition of the artwork. "Aces High" opens the album at full sprint, a breathless tribute to RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain, while "2 Minutes to Midnight" delivers one of Bruce Dickinson's most enduring vocal performances and a Cold War lyric that's lost none of its bite. The album closes with "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," a thirteen-and-a-half-minute retelling of Coleridge's poem that stands as one of the most audacious tracks the band has ever put to tape, proof that Maiden could stretch out epically without losing the hooks.
Powerslave went platinum in the US and remains a high-water mark in Iron Maiden's catalog, the record where the band's songwriting, showmanship, and mythology-building all clicked into place at once. It's a favorite among longtime fans precisely because it never plays it safe, from the historical storytelling to the sprawling closing epic.
This 2015 remaster arrives on 180-gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket, giving the album's Egyptian artwork the space it deserves and the low end the weight it demands. For anyone building out a proper Maiden collection, this is an essential one to have on wax.
