Shy Girl marks a homecoming and a creative high point for Hollie Cook, reggae’s modern orator of love. Returning to Mr Bongo Records, the label that released her self-titled debut, Cook delivers her most open, confident, and emotionally honest album yet. Across 12 sun-drenched tracks, Shy Girl explores love in all its forms, from joyful and magical to tender and bittersweet, wrapped in the soft-hued tropical pop and lovers rock sound she has refined over the years.
Written over three years and across four cities including London, Los Angeles, New York City, and Vejer de la Frontera in Spain, the album was created with longtime collaborators The General Roots Band. The result is a cohesive and deeply personal collection of analogue reggae compositions that feel intimate yet expansive. The buoyant title track opens the album with warmth and positivity, while highlights like the deep dub pulse of “Frontline” and the reflective closing ballad “We Share Love” showcase the emotional range of Cook’s songwriting.
Guest appearances include legendary dub MC Horseman on the first single “Night Night,” adding a classic sound system edge to the record. Drawing on a lifetime of musical influence, from her father Paul Cook’s record collection and her time touring with Ari Up of The Slits to her love of Janet Kay, Phyllis Dillon, and London’s bass-heavy sound system culture, Shy Girl distills Hollie Cook’s journey into a shimmering, heartfelt statement. Honest, soulful, and effortlessly melodic, it is a lovers rock album made to capture hearts, just as it did hers.
