Grails - Deep Politics

Deep Politics is Grails at their most cinematic. Released in 2011 on Temporary Residence, the band's sixth album traded some of the heaviness of Doomsdayer's Holiday for lush string arrangements, Mellotron and piano, drawing openly on the moody grandeur of 1970s Italian film scores.

Timba Harris wrote and played the strings that sweep through the record, while Emil Amos, Alex John Hall and William Slater layered guitars, Moog and samples beneath them. The band even cover Bruno Nicolai's "All The Colors Of The Dark," a nod to the giallo soundtracks that shaped the album's atmosphere. The title track, "Future Primitive" and "Almost Grew My Hair" balance menace and melancholy, and closer "Deep Snow" ends things on a haunting, wide-screen note.

It drew glowing reviews on release and remains a favorite for listeners who came to Grails through soundtrack and library music.
