For most of a decade the Goo Goo Dolls were a scrappy Buffalo punk band with a cult following. Then John Rzeznik wrote "Iris" for the City of Angels soundtrack, and everything changed. Dizzy Up the Girl, their sixth studio album, arrived in 1998 with that song on board and turned them into one of the biggest rock bands in America.
"Iris" spent 18 weeks at number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and earned three Grammy nominations, but the album is far more than its biggest hit. "Slide," "Black Balloon," "Broadway" and "Dizzy" all became radio staples, built on Rzeznik's open-tuned acoustic guitars, big choruses and a songwriter's eye for people stuck in hard places. Robby Takac's rougher-edged songs keep a little of the band's bar-band past in the mix.
The album has sold more than four million copies in the United States and remains the band's most successful record. It is one of the defining rock albums of the late 1990s, and "Iris" has only grown with time, finding a whole new audience in the streaming era.
This anniversary edition is a single LP pressed on Blue Iris colored vinyl.
