Gojira - From Mars To Sirius [Zoetrope]

This is the album that took four brothers-in-arms from Bayonne and made them a global concern. Released in 2005 on Listenable, From Mars To Sirius is a concept record about ecological collapse and interstellar rebirth, written by a band who meant every word of it, and it remains the moment groove metal found a conscience without losing an ounce of weight.

Joe Duplantier's riffs move like tectonic plates and his brother Mario's drumming is the reason a generation of players picked up sticks. "Flying Whales" is still the band's calling card, seven and a half minutes that open with sonar pings and end in one of the heaviest passages of the decade. "The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe" earns its title in about eight seconds, "Backbone" is pure forward momentum, and "Global Warming" closes the record on something close to hope.

Twenty years on it has aged into a genuine modern classic, and the environmental argument at its center has only gotten louder.

This 20th anniversary repress is a gatefold double LP pressed as a zoetrope picture disc, limited to 3,000 copies worldwide. The animation only works on a turntable, which is exactly the point.
