Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

In February 2000, a nine-piece Montreal collective spent nine days at Chemical Sound in Toronto and came out with the record that turned tape-loop apocalypse into something closer to liturgy. Released that October on Constellation, Lift Your Skinny Fists spreads four movements across four sides, each one built from field recordings, street-preacher monologues, and crescendos that take fifteen minutes to arrive and then refuse to let go.

It is the sound of nine people in a room refusing to hurry. "Storm" opens with a fanfare that feels genuinely triumphant before the ground gives way. "Static" buries a Coney Island oral history under decaying tape hiss. "Sleep" and "Antennas To Heaven..." wander further out, into glockenspiel duets recorded at a campsite and drones that sound transmitted from somewhere else entirely. Daryl Smith engineered, splitting the work between Chemical Sound and the band's own Hotel2Tango.

A quarter century on, it remains the high-water mark for a band that has never made a small record. If post-rock has a definitive statement, this is the one people keep coming back to.
