By 1994, Guru and DJ Premier had already helped define what New York rap could sound like. Hard to Earn stripped that sound down to its hardest form, doubling down on raw street reportage and some of the most recognizable beats Premier ever chopped.
"Mass Appeal" is the masterstroke, a sly, hypnotic loop built as a jab at watered-down radio rap that ironically became one of the group's signature songs. "Code of the Streets" paints a bleak picture with Guru's monotone at its most commanding, "Suckas Need Bodyguards" keeps the threat level high, and "DWYCK" has become a staple of every serious crate-digger's collection. Premier's scratched hooks and thick, dusty drums run throughout, with Guru's steady delivery as the perfect foil.
The album reached number 25 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, cementing Gang Starr as one of the most respected acts in the genre. It remains an essential document of mid-'90s East Coast hip-hop at its peak.
This reissue spreads all seventeen tracks across a double LP on 180-gram black vinyl.
