Originally released in 1976, Heritage is one of two seminal jazz-funk fusion classics trumpeter Eddie Henderson recorded for Blue Note following his work with Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi band. Born in NYC and raised in San Francisco, Henderson’s early musical life was shaped by family friends like Miles Davis and formal training at the San Francisco Conservatory. After earning a medical degree, he turned fully to music, gaining prominence alongside Hancock before launching his solo career.
For Heritage, Henderson assembled a forward-thinking group featuring Julian Priester on trombone, Hadley Caliman on woodwinds, Patrice Rushen on keys, Paul Jackson on bass, Mtume on percussion, and a rotation of powerhouse drummers—Mike Clark, Woody Theus, and Billy Hart. The result is a deep, atmospheric journey through fierce grooves, intricate arrangements, and vivid fusion textures. A defining statement of the era.
