Dig - Dig

Dig came together in Los Angeles in 1991 around singer and guitarist Scott Hackwith, who had already spent time behind the board producing for the Ramones. The band carried three guitars, which tells you most of what you need to know about how their debut sounds: thick, loud and built for the space between grunge and the alternative rock radio boom.

Producer Dave Jerden, already known for his work with Jane's Addiction and Alice in Chains, gave the album a huge, layered wall of guitar without burying Hackwith's melodies. "Believe" was the breakout, climbing to number 19 on the Modern Rock chart, and "I'll Stay High" and "Unlucky Friend" followed it out as singles. The record closes on the five minute "Decide," one of several longer tracks where the band stretch out.

Released on Radioactive Records in 1993, Dig sent the band out on the road with Rage Against the Machine, Blind Melon, Prong and the Goo Goo Dolls. It remains one of the great overlooked records of the era and a favorite for anyone who wore out their alternative radio presets in 1994.
