Depeche Mode - Violator

Violator is the record where Depeche Mode stopped being a cult band with hits and became one of the largest groups on the planet. Released in March 1990, it was their first album made with producer Flood, and the first they built by walking into the studio with sketches rather than blueprints. The looseness shows, and it is the whole point.

"Personal Jesus" arrives on a blues stomp nobody saw coming. "Enjoy the Silence" started life as a Martin Gore ballad before Alan Wilder and Flood rebuilt it into the most durable single the band ever released. "Policy of Truth" and "World in My Eyes" pull the same trick: enormous pop songs wearing black. François Kevorkian mixed most of the album and gave it the space and low end that still make it a demonstration record decades later, and Anton Corbijn's rose became one of the most recognizable sleeves in the medium.

Nine tracks, no filler, and an atmosphere that has been imitated constantly and matched almost never. Violator remains both the entry point and the summit for anyone working through this catalog.

This 2025 Sony Legacy reissue is remastered by Simon Heyworth, cut at The Exchange, pressed at Memphis Record Pressing, and housed in a soft matte gatefold jacket.
