Courant Zéro - Solari

Courant Zéro is the new moniker of Montréal multimedia installation artist Maxime Corbeil-Perron, co-founder of the Kohlenstoff label and a former pianist and jazz drummer. After years devoted to experimental film and audiovisual work, Solari marks his return to making records, and it channels a decade of sound art into what he calls maximalist ambient electronica.

The palette is wide: Buchla and modular synthesizers, feedback loops and chance-based compositional methods, all shaped with a filmmaker's sense of pacing. The album moves between unsettled disorientation and surprising warmth. "Strange Aorta" was written in the wake of his father's death, "En deçà du réel" pays tribute to video artist Manon Labrecque, and "Unyeldd" was partly inspired by rediscovering the records of Constellation labelmates Do Make Say Think. Fans of glitch, IDM and electroacoustic composition will all find a way in.

It is a striking first statement under a new name and a fine addition to Constellation's long run of adventurous electronic records.
