Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss (10th Anniversary)

Marking a decade since its original release, Chelsea Wolfe’s Abyss is a haunting exploration of dreams, reality, and the spaces in between. Designed as a score to the “hazy afterlife… an inverted thunderstorm… the dark backward… the abyss of time,” Wolfe captures the sensation of briefly waking from a dream, only to fall back into the subconscious.

For this album, Wolfe collaborated with multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm, drummer Dylan Fujioka, viola player Ezra Buchla, and guitarist Mike Sullivan (Russian Circles). The group recorded in Dallas, TX with acclaimed producer John Congleton (Swans, St. Vincent), conjuring a sound steeped in human frailty, intimacy, anxiety, and deep longing. Guided by the words of designer Yohji Yamamoto—“Perfection is ugly… I want to see scars, failure, disorder, distortion”—the result is eleven songs of smoldering, intimate intensity.
