Billed at the time as Charli XCX's major-label victory lap, Crash arrived in March 2022 as a deliberate, self-aware pivot away from the glitchy art-pop experimentation that had defined much of her prior catalog. Rather than fight against the pop machine, Charli leaned all the way in, framing the move as "selling out" on her own terms, and the result became her first number-one album in the UK, also topping the charts in Australia and Ireland.
Working with a wide roster of producers including A. G. Cook, George Daniel, and Oscar Holter, Charli built the record around glossy, hooky, 80s-tinged production that plays like a straight line back to the decade's biggest pop and new wave records. "Good Ones" and "Beg for You," the latter featuring Rina Sawayama, served as the album's singles, but it's the record's visual world, all femme fatale posturing, dark spells and curses, and recurring imagery of cars and car crashes, that gave Crash its distinct identity and made the campaign feel like a full-blown character piece rather than just another pop rollout.
In hindsight, Crash reads as a calculated setup, the glossy, maximalist pop move that cleared the runway for the total reinvention Charli would pull off next on Brat. It's a cohesive, confident record in its own right, and a key transitional moment in one of pop's most unpredictable careers.
This pressing comes on standard black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, a solid way to own the album that bridged two very different eras of Charli XCX.
