It's pronounced "P.O.'ed." Originally released in 1991, Piouhgd is the fifth studio album by the Texas-bred psych stalwarts, and it catches them mid-transformation, morphing from underground freakshow into the unlikely MTV mainstays they would become a few years later.
Face-melting guitars abound, courtesy of Paul Leary, and Gibby Haynes is at his most unpredictable, with the album packed with references to comedian Garry Shandling. The two-part "Revolution" opens the record in a haze of fuzz, the recurring "Lonesome Bulldog" pieces give it a twisted through-line, and "No, I'm Iron Man" takes a swing at Black Sabbath.
The standout is a skewed but surprisingly tuneful cover of Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man," a perfect example of the band's knack for finding melody in the madness.
Newly reissued by Matador, it is pressed on a single LP.
