Anyone who saw the Butthole Surfers in their prime will tell you the shows were something closer to a happening than a concert, and fellow Texan Richard Linklater has described walking into one as a turning point in your life. Dean Ween has called them the greatest live band of his lifetime. Live at the Leather Fly documents that legendary stage show.
Mixed by guitarist Paul Leary, the album channels the band's ferocious energy into a speaker-busting cacophony across 21 unrelenting songs. Gibby Haynes rants, howls and wields his megaphone over Leary's acid-fried guitar and the band's pounding twin-drum attack, tearing through fan favorites from "Human Cannonball" to "The Annoying Song."
For anyone who never got to witness the chaos in person, it is as close as you can get to standing in the room, and for San Antonio's finest psych-punk weirdos it is the live record fans always wanted.
