By 1997 the question hanging over Bob Dylan was whether he had anything left. He had not released an album of original songs since Under the Red Sky in 1990, and the seven years between were filled with covers records and the endless tour. Then Time Out of Mind arrived on September 30, 1997, and settled the argument permanently.
Producer Daniel Lanois, back for a second run with Dylan after Oh Mercy, built a sound both cavernous and claustrophobic, all carefully placed microphones and layered murk, with Dylan's voice riding the top like a man calling in from somewhere down the road. "Love Sick" opens on pulsing Farfisa organ. "Not Dark Yet" sits at the center as one of the most unflinching things he has ever written. "Cold Irons Bound" earned him a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, and closer "Highlands" runs sixteen minutes, the longest song he had ever recorded.
The record reached number 10 on the Billboard 200, Dylan's first studio album in the top ten since 1979's Slow Train Coming, and took home three Grammys, including his first and only Album of the Year. Rolling Stone later placed it at number 410 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
This 2026 Columbia/Legacy reissue presents the original album across four sides of 180-gram black vinyl, pressed at United Record Pressing. No bonus disc, no filler, just the album as it was built to unfold.
