Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children

In 1998, two brothers working in near total seclusion in the Pentland Hills released a debut that sounded like it had been unearthed rather than recorded. Music Has The Right To Children introduced Boards of Canada as archivists of a childhood that never quite happened, assembling warped tape, half-remembered nature documentaries, and detuned analog synthesizers into something both deeply comforting and quietly unsettling.

The album works by suggestion rather than statement. "Wildlife Analysis" opens the record like the title sequence of a lost educational film, "Roygbiv" pairs a sunlit bassline with a melody that keeps slipping out of tune, and "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" and "Aquarius" stretch hip-hop derived breakbeats into slow motion. Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin built the whole thing from equipment that audibly wobbles and drifts, and that instability is the point. Sampled children's voices surface and vanish, and nothing ever resolves the way you expect.

Released jointly by Warp and Skam, it became the record every subsequent generation of ambient and electronic producers has had to reckon with, and the reference point for an entire aesthetic of analog nostalgia. Nearly thirty years on it has lost none of its strangeness.
