"As long as I can remember, I wanted to make a record with my dad," Billy Strings has said, and Me/And/Dad is that dream finally realized. Released in November 2022 on Rounder Records and recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville, the album brings Strings together with his father, Terry Barber, the man who first taught him guitar, for fourteen bluegrass and country classics the two have played together since Strings was a kid.
Rather than reinventing the material, the record leans into familiarity and feel, songs like "Long Journey Home," "Little Cabin Home on the Hill," and Doc Watson's "Way Downtown" delivered with the easy chemistry of two people who've been trading these same licks for decades. Pulling from bluegrass standards and classic country writers like George Jones, A.P. Carter, and Lester Flatt and Bill Monroe, the album functions less as a covers record and more as a direct document of the music that shaped Strings into the musician he is today.
The record earned a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, recognition that reflects both the strength of the performances and the genuine emotional weight behind the project. For an artist who's spent his career pushing bluegrass into new territory, Me/And/Dad stands out as his most personal release, a direct tribute to where it all started.
This 180-gram vinyl pressing is a fitting way to hold onto a genuinely intimate chapter in Strings' catalog.
