Formed in 1981 by ex-Skids guitarist Stuart Adamson with longtime friend Bruce Watson—and joined in 1982 by rhythm section Tony Butler and Mark Brzezicki—Big Country emerged as a compelling force. Blending punk, new wave, and even new romantic elements with emotionally charged pop/rock, their sound carried a passionate Celtic influence and unwavering integrity. Using effects to make their chiming guitars evoke traditional Scottish instruments, Adamson and Watson created something truly unique and highly influential. Within a year of their debut, many bands began to emulate their sound—though none quite matched Big Country’s distinctiveness.
Originally released in July 1983, The Crossing is widely regarded as the band’s finest album. Timeless yet out of step with prevailing trends, its well-crafted songs and signature sound took it to #3 on the UK charts and into the U.S. Top 20. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album features four of Big Country’s most iconic tracks: “In a Big Country,” “Fields of Fire (400 Miles),” “Harvest Home,” and “Chance.”
