beabadoobee - Pylon [Indie Exclusive]

Beatrice Laus started out posting bedroom recordings to the internet as a teenager and has spent every album since putting more distance between herself and that origin story. Pylon arrives after 2024's This Is How Tomorrow Moves and is the most assured record she has made.

The nineties guitar reference points are still here, but they have stopped being the whole point. "Pylon" and "Switchblade" are built on riffs that would have sounded at home on a Breeders record, while "Sun Has Set" and "Write Me A Letter" pull toward something quieter and more exposed. "In Motion" and "Radio" are the pop songs, and she no longer sounds apologetic about writing them. Fourteen tracks is generous, and the sequencing earns the length by alternating between the two modes rather than front-loading either.

What has changed most is the confidence. Early beabadoobee records felt like someone trying on influences. This one sounds like a writer who has worked out which parts she wants to keep.
