Ariana Grande - Sweetener

Sweetener was released in August 2018, sixteen months after the Manchester Arena attack, and the record carries that weight without ever making it the subject. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2019 Grammys, Grande's first Grammy win.

Pharrell Williams produced roughly half of it, and his tracks are the strangest and most rewarding things here. "Blazed," "The Light Is Coming," and "Successful" swap conventional pop structure for loops, negative space, and vocal stacking. Max Martin handles the other half, including "No Tears Left To Cry," which opens on a slow fade before flipping into a UK garage bounce, and "God Is A Woman," all low-end swagger and gospel harmony. "Breathin" turns a panic attack into a chorus. "Get Well Soon" closes the album with forty seconds of silence appended, a quiet memorial that says more than any lyric could.

It is the album where Grande's ambition caught up with her instrument, and where she started using her voice as a texture rather than just a showcase.
