Departing from his earlier explorations in acid house, ambient, and general techno, Richard D. James constructs ...I Care Because You Do around intricate, extended drum machine loops, richly layered analog synthesizers, and occasional string arrangements. The resulting soundscape feels like a surreal, futuristic dance party—part mechanical, part organic, and entirely captivating.
True to his playful spirit, James peppers the album with witty in-jokes and sly innuendos. The track “Ventolin,” named after an asthma medication, is one of the most abrasive on the record, featuring a piercing high-frequency tone designed to mimic the sensation of tinnitus. “Alberto Balsalm” takes its name from a British hair care brand, while “Come On You Slags” incorporates sampled dialogue from a pornographic film, adding a provocative edge.
James also toys with language in his song titles through clever anagrams: “Aphex Twin” becomes “Wax the Nip,” while “The Aphex Twin” morphs into “The Waxen Pith,” “Wet Tip Hen Ax,” and “Next Heap With.” His full name, Richard David James, is playfully rearranged as “Acrid Avid Jam Shred,” reflecting the artist’s irreverent and enigmatic approach to his work.
