A few years ago, Angel Olsen quietly launched Somethingscosmic, a personal imprint created to give her the freedom to release music "when and how I want to," while still partnering with longtime collaborators at Jagjaguwar. Now, the label presents its second release: Cosmic Waves Volume 1—a thoughtfully curated compilation conceived as a kind of musical dialogue.

Side A features a handpicked roster of artists selected by Olsen, each contributing a song of their own choosing. Side B, meanwhile, offers a mirror image: the same artists, but with songs chosen by Olsen and reinterpreted through her distinctive voice and sensibility. The result is an evocative constellation of sound that illuminates not only the talent of each featured artist but also the expansive emotional and stylistic range that has made Angel Olsen such a singular and enduring force in modern music.

“As someone who emerged through a small tape label,” Olsen reflects, “I've always wanted to keep that spirit of discovery alive—like I had with my debut Strange Cacti—while uplifting artists and friends whose music has deeply moved me.” She continues, “There’s something uniquely intimate about covering another artist’s song. We all make it our own—or at least we try—but every time I dive into someone else’s lyrics and melodies, I learn something new. Exploring a variety of styles stretches my own creative process in unexpected ways.”

The artists featured on Cosmic Waves Volume 1 draw from a wide spectrum of sonic landscapes and influences: Poppy Jean Crawford's magnetic growl and searing guitar work; Coffin Prick's reckless, psychedelic fuzz; Sarah Grace White’s mesmerizing vocal and melodic presence; Maxim Ludwig’s refined, minimalist aesthetic; and Camp Saint Helene’s expansive, windswept folk. Each contribution feels both personal and interconnected, woven into a larger cosmic thread.

“Thank you for listening and supporting this experiment,” Olsen writes. “If you like what you hear, please support these artists—buy their records, grab some merch, go to their shows, or simply tell a friend. It means more than you know. Love, Angel.”
